Before service begins, confirm that the lamp, brush, forms or tips, files, and prep products are ready at the station. For longer extensions, very flexible natural nails, or clients who are hard on their hands, build in two layers. Cure a thin foundation layer first, then add the structured layer. This approach offers more control than trying to sculpt every millimeter of length and apex from one oversized bead.
Applying Acrygel Over Full-Cover Tips
Full-cover tips can reduce service time when the fit is exact and the natural nail has been properly prepared. Select a tip that covers sidewall to sidewall without being forced. If a tip is too small, it creates tension. If it is too wide, it looks heavy and makes precise cuticle work more difficult.
Apply a small amount of acrygel inside the contact area of the tip, then press it onto the prepared nail at a slight angle to minimize trapped air. Hold it in place and flash cure if your lamp and system support that technique. Complete the full cure before moving on. After attachment, apply a thin overlay of acrygel when the client needs additional structure, a smoother transition, or a more tailored apex.

File for Shape, Not for Rescue
After curing, remove the form and assess the enhancement before picking up a file. Check the side profile, lower arch, apex placement, free-edge thickness, and symmetry from every angle. A well-placed acrygel application should need refinement, not reconstruction.
Use a 180-grit file to establish the final shape and refine the sidewalls. Keep the file parallel to the sidewall rather than sawing into it. Refine the surface with light, controlled strokes, preserving strength through the center of the nail. If you use an e-file, work at a speed and pressure appropriate for the bit, material, and your training. The goal is a smooth surface with minimal product removal.
Dust completely, then apply color, art, or a top coat. For sheer gel colors and cat-eye effects, a smooth overlay matters because uneven structure can show through the finish. Common Acrygel Problems and Practical Fixes
If the product sticks to the brush, the brush may be too dry or the technician may be pressing into the acrygel instead of patting it. Add a small amount of slip solution, wipe off the excess, and use lighter contact. If the product feels difficult to move, check room temperature as well. Cooler rooms can make some formulas feel firmer.
If the enhancement lifts at the cuticle, first look at preparation and product contact. Remaining cuticle, dust, skin contact, overly thick product at the perimeter, or incomplete curing are more common causes than the acrygel itself. Do not attempt to solve lifting by applying extra primer or a thicker layer at the cuticle.
If the extension breaks across the middle, evaluate structure. The apex may be too flat, positioned too far forward, or too thin for the length and the client’s daily use. A short, square salon set and a long tapered set do not require the same architecture. Build for the service reality, not only the reference photo.
